It is tempting to treat Gen Z as a marketing problem: a demographic that has stopped responding to the things that used to work. That is half right. What has changed is not their appetite for going out — it is what they accept as evidence that somewhere is worth going.
A claim like "the best cocktails in town" is filtered out before it registers. A photograph of the actual drink, the actual price, and the actual room at 9pm on a Friday is not. This is a generation that grew up reading recommendation feeds, which means they have highly calibrated instincts for what is paid and what is real — and a strong preference for detail that would be inconvenient to fake.
They find places on social. They do not decide there. Between the reel and the reservation sits a research step: checking the menu, the price band, the hours, whether the place suits the group they are going with. Venues lose people in that gap constantly, usually because the information is somewhere the platform does not surface.
The practical implication is that the fun content and the boring content have to co-exist. The reel earns the attention; the listing closes it. Brands that invest heavily in one and neglect the other tend to have good reach and mediocre trade.
This is not a discount-driven audience, but it is a value-literate one. An offer that requires a phone call, a code, and a set of conditions gets abandoned. An offer with a clear window, a clear price and a clear thing you get does not. Happy hour works precisely because it is legible: this hour, this price, no negotiation.
The upside of an audience that documents everything is that a good experience produces free, credible content at volume. The downside is symmetrical. The venues doing well here treat the first visit as the marketing spend — because that is what actually gets photographed and repeated.
